Córdoba walking tour

The Great Mosque, universal symbol of Moorish heritage in Spain, and one of history's most extraordinary works of art, is in Cordoba. Admire this architectural jewel - a unique space made up of forms, light, columns and colours, where you will feel all the splendour of ancient Al-Andalus. It is a designated World Heritage Site. Its beauty, nobility and perfection make this one of the most impressive works of art in the world. Look inside the Great Mosque for a unique, exciting experience. Its atmosphere will surround you

in magic, take you back to times of past splendour. Discover its more than five hundred columns supporting rows of arches, that make up a forest of strange red and black perspectives, light and form - an unprecedented, fascinating labyrinth. On your visit you will be amazed by sumptuous doorways, domes, rooms with stunning decoration, carved marble pieces that are real works of art, mosaics, tiles, pictures... Inside, at the centre of its forest of columns, a great Christian cathedral suddenly rises up. Construction on it began in the 16th century within the Great Mosque, and it is an architectural wonder in its own right, with a range of different styles that go from the Gothic to the Baroque. Another Muslim-Hispanic legacy is the Jewish quarter, which runs from the mosque to the walls and the Almodovar Gate. It is made up of a network of narrow streets with whitewashed façades, adorned with tiles and grilles. The Plazuela de las Flores is located in this district, as well as the house of the Dukes of Medina Sidonia, and the Synagogue, the only one that still stands in the city. Continuation to Granada.

Day 3 (7 Dec 2014, Sunday)                          Granada – Alhambra – Generalife Gardens – Rhonda

Breakfast at the hotel.

Visit Alhambra and Generalife, Cathedral and Royal Chapel

The Alhambra and Generalife together form an impressive monumental site, built atop a red-coloured hill that dominates the city and plain of Granada. The Alhambra was once home to the Al-Andalus Sultans and today it is Spain’s most visited monument. Every year, millions of visitors come to admire the exquisite beauty of its many rooms, patios and gardens. Everything in the Alhambra was designed to reach perfection: from the ancient “Alcázar”, or military fortress, to the Royal Nasrid Palaces, decorated in plaster and tile work, with inscriptions from the Koran that evoke the notion of Heaven on Earth. The famous Patio de los Leones (Lions’ Patio) or the Cámara de la Sultana (Sultana’s Chamber) are examples of this poetic architecture that feeds the imagination. Besides its intricate decoration, water is a fundamental element, ever-present and used throughout the site as if it were another architectural tool. The whisper of fresh water from the Alhambra’s numerous fountains and ponds create a cool interior microclimate: you will notice the difference in temperature between this magical site and the rest of Granada. Next to the Palaces, on the slopes of the “Cerro del Sol” (Hill of the Sun) you will find the Generalife. The site is surrounded by intimate gardens that provide a sense of peace and calm, with an abundance of different flowers whose scent will overwhelm you.

Here it is well worth taking a moment to sit, rest and enjoy the shimmering tones of light reflected in a host of water features.

In the late afternoon, we leave for Ronda.

Day 4 (8 Dec 2014, Monday)                         Rhonda – Malaga - Casablanca

Breakfast at the hotel.

Ronda visit

This town in the Málaga region sits on either side of the Tajo del Ronda, a narrow gorge more than 150 metres deep. Celts, Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs all inhabited these lands, which were reconquered by the Catholic Monarchs. The historic quarter, reminiscent of the Arab age and with a medieval layout is scattered to the south of the Guadalevín, while more modern Ronda, the part which sprang up after the 16th century, unfolds to the north of the course of this river. Several bridges unite the two halves of one of the most interesting towns on the route of the Whitewashed Villages, in the heart of the the Ronda hills, only a few kilometres from the Costa del Sol.

One major religious work is Santa María la Mayor, where Arab and Christian features combine. On the site of an old Roman temple, the Arabs built the Main Mosque of Ronda in the 13th century. Preserved from this period are the mihrab arch, decorated with stucco, and the minaret, transformed into a belltower. In the following centuries, its interior was enriched with Renaissance and baroque decoration, as can be admired in its Main Chapel, choir and altars.

The Mudejar style, with stucco and horseshoe arches, can be clearly seen in the San Sebastián minaret, later used for Christian worship. Another Muslim legacy are the Arab baths, on the banks of the river. They date from the 13th century and are very well preserved.Another important site in Ronda is the Plaza de toros de Ronda, the oldest bullfighting ring in Spain that is still used, albeit infrequently.

It was built in 1784 in the Neoclassical style by the architect José Martin de Aldehuela, who also designed the Puente Nuevo.
